We are a family farm in every sense of the word. Currently, three generations work our farm but the history of farming goes back much further than that, we count granddaddys and great-great-grandparents and even further in our farming lineage.
While the adults do the brunt of the hard work, even our littlest know about cattle and crops and weather and the hard work that goes into living the life we love. Already we hear from the kids that they want to live this life when they are “big”. In order to ensure this is an option for them we are constantly looking for opportunities to expand and evolve our operation. None of us farm full time but instead work “real” jobs off the farm and spend our evenings and weekends at our second job, farming.
The Farmers Wife was born out of a desire to provide healthy food for other families, not just our own, at a reasonable price. While it takes an entire village to run our farm, the Farmers Wife is the passion of the mommas. We are the chef’s and pediatricians of our families and know the benefits of good, clean food to a growing child, a healthy adult and aging family. Faced with food allergies and a general concern for the health of our families we wanted to find a way to supplement the farm income and care for our families. We invite you to experience what real, fresh off the farm beef tastes like and do it with the peace of mind that there is nothing artificial in it!
We have a passion for growing things and doing it in a manner that is healthy and wholesome. We have a first-rate cattle operation designed to raise healthy cattle and maintain the health of our entire farm. It is not uncommon for us to host cattle groups and FFA tours to showcase our operation and management techniques. Our cattle are not pure-bred as we believe in hybrid vigor. Instead we raise a cross breed of Angus, Simmental and Gelbvieh bloodlines. Our cattle are closely monitored for health and weight to ensure that only the best cattle stay in our herd to produce the best beef for your plate! We rotate our cattle into fresh pastures every few days and they do not graze the same ground for at least ten days once they have been moved off it. We also have wildlife areas all around the farm and regularly see a wide variety of native species. Our farm is an oasis in a suburban area not only for us but for God’s wild creatures as well.
While our cattle are not grass finished, they are grass raised. Depending on the season and the weather, we keep our cattle on grass until a few months before processing is scheduled, at that time they are put up and fed a hay and grain ration to ensure optimum growth and taste. Grass finished beef is generally older than grain finished due to the amount of time it takes to grow a beef to sufficient weight to process on grass. We do not use growth hormones in our cattle, only the necessary vaccinations to ensure they are free of disease.
